You just purchased your first fire pit, fireplace or fire ring. You open up the packaging and start to assemble it. You set it out in your backyard and, after about six months, you notice that it looks pretty beaten and rusty. You should have gotten yourself a fire pit cover.

Fire pit covers are available from many sources. Most fire pit covers are either specifically manufactured for a particular model or come in a generic size and shape to fit the model you currently have.

There are many materials used to make fire pit covers. Be careful about the type of material you purchase when you decide to get a fire pit cover. Materials such as polyester, vinyl, canvas and more are available. Make sure that the unit is washable and has some type of water resistant element to it such as waterproof materials or treatment. Also, make sure that the dimensions fit your needs. Just because you have a round fire pit doesn’t mean that the round fire pit cover shown will fit your application. Also the material must be able to withstand climactic conditions such as wind, snow, rain and ultraviolet radiation. If you live in a climate with salt air, you will also have to contend with the effects of salt corrosion.

Some units also come with adjustable straps and with elastic hems and air vents to help reduce wind lofting and build up of condensation. They also come with Velcro straps for quick closure.

The best tip about fire pit covers is you get what you pay for. If you want a durable product, you should expect to pay more. To put things in perspective, one reviewer of a recent purchase of a custom fit fire pit cover found that the material was cheap and reminded them of a dollar store rain poncho. They also commented that the fire pit cover would melt if they have a brain dead moment. On the other hand, for an additional twelve dollars, a reviewer commented that the fire pit cover they purchased was polyester backed with PVC and was a durable material which was waterproof. Overall, the second fire pit cover rated higher than the first hands down.

As you can see, making a choice about a fire pit cover can require some work, but the work and effort you put in now will pay off in the years to come through the added years you will get out of your backyard investment. Always ask questions of your vendor before buying to make sure that you get the fire pit cover that will best suit your needs.
